Despite a battling performance Forest Green Rovers, if Canvey Island win their game in hand on Saturday afternoon, will be relegated.
Hereford went close to taking the lead after 17 minutes. Craig Stanley stole the ball from Paul Warhurst and threaded it through for Adam Stansfield whose low shot was well saved by Dean Williams.
However, two minutes later the Bulls did go in front. From a corner, Stansfield found himself unmarked and headed past the static Williams from close range.
Forest Green tried to get back on level terms and Warhurst's long-range drive needed two attempts by Bulls keeper Craig Mawson to gather the ball.
Just after the half-hour a goalmouth scramble kept the Hereford defence on their toes when, from Jon Beswetherick's cross, Charlie Griffin and Scott Rogers had efforts charged down.
Four minutes after the interval Hereford grabbed their second. The Forest Green defence were caught out with a well-timed throughball which Stansfield latched on to and he had the simple task of firing beyond Williams into the net.
Rovers got back into the match just after the hour. Beswetherick's free-kick found veteran Warhurst who headed in at the back post to spark a possible revival.
But, despite playing the better football, Rovers were not able to find that all-important equaliser and Hereford wrapped the game up with ten minutes remaining through substitute Danny Carey-Bertram.
